Frequently Asked Questions

What should I be looking for when calling around for training?

You should be looking for training! Most new operators believe that all training schools teach roughly the same thing, but prices vary because they are different companies. Calling around for pricing is the worst thing any person or company could do. The reason why is because most people ask for a price rather than what is included in that price. Remember to ask how much training you will receive in hours!

Are all Certificates and Training Schools the Same?

Short answer: No.
Long Answer: A certificate does not get people jobs, Skill does. A Certificate will get you an interview, Training and your skills will get you the Job.
Many places offer Forklift Training, but only a couple companies offer real extensive training programs. Most forklift “schools” issue a certificate after a few hours of a student operating a forklift. In the forklift industry, these places are refered to as “Certificate Mills”. Simply, you get what you pay for. They do not abide by the guidelines. We meet and EXCEED CSA Standards B335-15.

Do you work with Social Services, E.I, WSIB, etc.?

Yes, we work with all governing agencies. Please contact us with your workers info for more details.

What is the minimum age to be able to operate a forklift?

17 years old with permission from parent or guardian; otherwise, 18 years old.

Do I need a driver’s license or anything else to become a forklift operator?

No, there are no requirements to become a forklift operator. No driver’s license is needed. We do, however, require our students to wear safety shoes while in our facility.

What is the difference between a license and a certificate?

In Canada and the United States, there is no such thing as a Forklift License. A Forklift Certificate is awarded to students who demonstrate after many hours/days that they are capable of operating a forklift safely. People call it a Forklift License because it looks like a license, but legally there is no forklift license. A certificate cannot get you a job, only your skill level will.
It comes down to this, certificates will get you a few interviews but if you cannot operate a lift truck properly, then you will not get a job.

Why do some schools have a smart card/security chip on their certification card and others do not?

A security chip is designed to hold secure information, since there is no such thing as license or drivers license number, there is no reason to have it. Businesses or the Ministry of Labour have no such device to read this information. This is strictly a marketing technique for people in order for it to seem more “valid” than others. You can buy 100 of these cards online for less than $80.

What do the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Ministry of Labour (MOL) have to do with getting certified on a Forklift?

The CSA and MOL have set standards and guidelines in which forklift schools should meet. At L.I.F.T Training, we meet and exceed these standards to ensure that you will operate a forklift safely to protect not only you, but others around you.

Does a forklift certificate expire?

The CSA Standards B335-04 had a practical expiry date of 18 months which is no longer required. The new Legislation B335-15 requires operators to Renew their certificate every 3 years.

I am from another Province/Country, is my certificate valid in Ontario?

No, the certificate would not be valid in Ontario. Also, if you receive a forklift certificate in Ontario, it might not be valid in other Provinces/Countries

Yes, we provide job assistance through our own staffing agency Lift Temp Inc. Lift Temp only specialise in Forklift operators, and general labours. We have put more new operators to work then anyone else! We give them the experience they need to get a job.
